Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya. Ancient Echoes Suspended in Time evokes perfectly the idea that Nature is Sacred embracing the mystery and wonder of all life. Angela/Angie saw the opportunity when this magnificent bull elephant emerged from the deep shadows of the riverine forest to shower his ancient wrinkled skin with dust. He had just crossed the Mara River and paused before continuing on to the deep reed beds of Musiara Marsh to feed. The place he had chosen to stop for his dust bath is called "Fumbi Fumbi" meaning "dust, dust" in Swahili where the Mara's fine clay soils turn to powder in the dry season.
The old bull sucked up trunkful after trunkful of the fine powder before blasting it up and over his whole body, using his flexible trunk like a powerful fire hose. He continued in this manner for some ten minutes, his eyes closed to keep out the dust seemingly almost asleep on his giant feet, signifying the reverie he appeared to be feeling - the sense of pleasure as the cooling dust settled on his skin. Then with a massive exhalation he wandered off. Angela Scott's image speaks to us of the wonder of nature. It is almost as if the elephant is emerging from the dust of creation, being brought to life in front of our eyes. There is a sense of calm, of rebirth, of reverence, testifying to the creativity of nature and an ancient life force. You can feel it.
