Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya. A baby elephant stays within a few meters of its mother for the first year, resting when it can amongst the comforting presence of its family herd. The little calves often lie down when the herd is feeding, soaking up the shade cast by their mothers’ enormous bodies, suckling for up to 4 years or until the next calf is born.
